    ASTM B165 - Monel 400 / UNS N04400 Seamless Pipe & Tube Specification

    ASTM B165 (also ASTM B165 Monel 400, ASTM B165 seamless pipe, ASTM B165 seamless tube, ASTM B165 UNS N04400, Monel 400 seamless pipe ASTM B165) is the specification for seamless nickel-copper alloy pipe and tube in UNS N04400 (Monel® 400, Werkstoff 2.4360, DIN 17743 NiCu30Fe). The standard covers material hot-extruded or cold-drawn from a single solid billet, supplied in the annealed condition and hydrostatic-tested on every length. Welded product falls under ASTM B725 / B730; condenser tube for welding into a tubesheet is covered by ASTM B163, a separate specification.     Scope and Size Range

    ASTM B165 covers seamless pipe dimensioned to NPS schedules and seamless tube dimensioned by OD and wall. Pipe runs from NPS 1/4 to NPS 8 in Schedule 5S, 10S, 40 and 80 as standard, with larger sizes by agreement. Tube is specified by OD and minimum wall, typically 1/8 to 6 inches OD with wall from 0.035 inch upward. Length is single random (16 to 22 feet) or double random (22 to 44 feet); cut-to-length on order.

    Mechanical and Hydrostatic Requirements

    Annealed UNS N04400 under ASTM B165 must meet 70 ksi (483 MPa) minimum tensile, 28 ksi (193 MPa) minimum yield (0.2 percent offset) and 35 percent minimum elongation in 2 inches (50 mm). Stress-relieved condition is offered where higher yield is needed. Every length is hydrostatic-tested using the Barlow formula P = 2 S t / D with allowable fibre stress S = 13,800 psi (95 MPa) for annealed Monel 400, held at least five seconds. A non-destructive electric test (eddy-current or ultrasonic) may be substituted by purchaser-supplier agreement. Flattening and flaring tests are run on tube; reverse-bend is run on thin-wall tube to demonstrate ductility.

    Each length carries continuous stencilling with ASTM B165, UNS N04400, size or OD x wall, heat number and supplier mark. Mill chemistry is reported by OES (ASTM E1086) with C, S, N, O by ASTM E1019. General service ships against EN 10204 type 3.1; pressure-equipment and sour-service orders against type 3.2.     Three ASTM specs cover Monel 400 in piping shapes; confusing them is a recurring procurement error. Chemistry is identical UNS N04400; the manufacturing route and end use differ. ASTM B165 is general-service seamless pipe and tube. ASTM B163 is seamless condenser and heat-exchanger tube for welding or expansion into a tubesheet (eddy-current default). ASTM B564 is forgings: weld-neck flanges, blind flanges, valve bodies, fittings forged from billet. A typical assembly weld-couples B165 pipe to a B564 flange; the heat trace runs through both certificates.
