Monel 400 forging (also Monel 400 forgings, Monel 400 forged parts, Alloy 400 forging, UNS N04400 forging, Werkstoff 2.4360 forging) is the net-shape product form of the nickel-copper alloy covered by ASTM B564. Supplied open-die for large blocks and shafts, closed-die for flange blanks and valve bodies, piece weight 5 kg to 2 tonne, annealed, with EN 10204 type 3.1 or 3.2 MTC. Used for ASME B16.5 flange blanks, valve and fitting bodies per ASME B16.34, pump impellers, naval shafts and HF acid tube-sheet blocks. Alloy is UNS N04400; chemistry matches B164 rod and B127 plate. Monel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation; TorqBolt is not authorized by, affiliated with or endorsed by Special Metals.
ASTM B564 covers forgings of nickel and nickel-alloy grades including UNS N04400 (Monel 400), N06600, N06625, N08800 and N10276. For UNS N04400 the spec ships in the annealed condition only. Product forms in scope: flange blanks, valve and pump bodies, rings, blocks, discs, shafts and net-shape forged hardware. NDE per B564 is visual and dimensional; ultrasonic test per ASTM A388 and liquid penetrant per ASTM E165 on indent for pressure-vessel and sour-service duty. Forging stock over 80 mm thickness routes to B564 even when the finished part nominally falls under B127 plate.
Two routes split by piece weight and geometry. Open-die forging runs on hydraulic press 1500 to 4000 ton; the billet is upset, drawn and pierced between flat or vee dies. Closed-die forging runs on counter-blow hammer or screw press; the billet fills a sunk-die impression in one or two blows for near-net shape.
| Route | Piece weight | Typical parts |
|---|---|---|
| Open-die | 200 kg to 2 tonne | Shafts, blocks, ring blanks, tube-sheet stock |
| Closed-die (hammer) | 5 kg to 100 kg | Flange blanks, valve bonnets, small bodies |
| Closed-die (press) | 20 kg to 200 kg | Valve bodies, pump impellers, choke bodies |
| Ring-rolled | 50 kg to 1 tonne | Seamless rings, flange blanks 8 in. NB and up |
Open-die output carries 6 to 12 mm stock allowance per machined face; closed-die sits at 2 to 4 mm. Ring-rolled blanks for ASME B16.5 weld-neck flanges 12 in. NB and up beat open-die on grain flow and on cost.
Monel 400 forges hot in a narrow window. Forge 1700 to 2150 F (925 to 1175 C); finish not below 1450 F (790 C) to avoid hot-cracking. Anneal at 1600 to 1700 F (870 to 925 C), rapid air-cool or water-quench. Heavy sections over 100 mm get a stress relief at 1000 to 1100 F (540 to 595 C) when residual stress matters for machining or NACE service.
| Step | Temperature | Hold and cool |
|---|---|---|
| Soak before forge | 2050 to 2150 F (1120 to 1175 C) | 1 hour per 100 mm thickness |
| Finish forging | 1450 F (790 C) min | Quench on transport rack |
| Anneal | 1600 to 1700 F (870 to 925 C) | 1 hour per 25 mm, air or water |
| Stress relieve (heavy) | 1000 to 1100 F (540 to 595 C) | 2 hours per 25 mm, slow cool |
Detail on the heat treatment page. Slow cooling from anneal raises hardness through copper precipitation; rapid air-cool or water-quench is mandatory.
Working envelope ex Mumbai: piece weight 5 kg to 2 tonne typical, larger on indent; section thickness 25 mm to 600 mm; flange blank diameter to 1200 mm; ring blank diameter to 1500 mm on ring-rolling mill. Stock allowance is sized off the final-machined drawing; supply rough or semi-finish machined on indent. Round bar is the natural input for shafts up to 250 mm diameter.
B564 chemistry matches B164 rod and B127 plate; detail on chemical composition.

ASTM B564 sets the floor for annealed UNS N04400 forging at 70 ksi (480 MPa) tensile min, 25 ksi (170 MPa) yield min at 0.2 percent offset, 35 percent elongation. Hardness 110 to 149 HBW (about 75 HRB), below the NACE MR0175 35 HRC ceiling. Detail on the mechanical properties page.
| Property | ASTM B564 Forging, Annealed |
|---|---|

Traceability chain: heat to billet to forging to drawing item to machined piece, preserved on the MTC and forging stamp. NACE MR0175 shipments carry the compliance statement, Brinell reading and heat-treat condition on the MTC. See sour service applications.
What is the Monel 400 forging route? Net-shape product form of UNS N04400 to ASTM B564. Open-die on hydraulic press for 200 kg to 2 tonne pieces; closed-die on hammer or press for 5 kg to 200 kg parts; ring-rolling for seamless rings and large flange blanks. Forge 1700 to 2150 F, finish above 1450 F, anneal 1600 to 1700 F, air-cool. Heavy sections stress-relieved at 1000 to 1100 F.
What sizes are available? Forgings from 5 kg flange blanks to 2 tonne open-die blocks. ASME B16.5 flange blanks 1/2 in. to 24 in. NB, valve bodies to ASME B16.34 Class 150 to 2500, pump impellers to 600 mm and naval shafts to 4 m length. Larger pieces on indent.
Does it qualify for NACE MR0175 sour service? Annealed B564 forging clears NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 for the nickel-copper group at the 35 HRC ceiling. Hardness 110 to 149 HBW. Sour-service forgings ship EN 10204 type 3.2 with the NACE compliance statement, Brinell reading and heat-treat condition on the MTC.
Why pick forging over plate or bar for a flange? Forging delivers radial grain flow aligned with the bolt-hole pattern, raising fatigue and burst resistance over a plate burn-out or bar disc. For ASME B16.5 weld-neck flanges 8 in. NB and up, ring-rolled forging beats plate on cost; plate burn-out wastes 30 to 40 percent of input as core drop. For valve bodies and pump impellers, forging is the only route that meets ASME B16.34 wall-thickness rules.
