Monel 400 Wire - Spring, Welding (ERNiCu-7) and Fine Wire, UNS N04400

Monel 400 wire (also Monel 400 spring wire, Monel 400 welding wire, ERNiCu-7, Alloy 400 wire, UNS N04400 wire, Werkstoff 2.4360 wire) is the cold-drawn wire form of the nickel-copper alloy covered by ASTM B164 and, in welding-filler form, by AWS A5.14 ERNiCu-7. Supplied in three categories: cold-drawn spring wire in annealed through spring tempers; welding filler wire as cut TIG rod and MIG spool for joining B127 plate, B165 pipe, B564 forgings and B164 bolting; and fine wire for marine instrumentation, sealing rings and mesh. Diameter 0.5 mm to 10 mm, EN 10204 type 3.1 or 3.2 MTC, NACE MR0175 compliant for sour-service spring duty. Alloy is UNS N04400. ASTM B164 Scope and Wire Categories for Monel 400

ASTM B164 covers UNS N04400 and N04405 as hot-worked and cold-worked rod, bar and cold-worked wire. Wire ships cold-drawn in coil, in B164 Table 2 conditions: annealed, quarter hard, half hard, hard, spring. The same chemistry feeds the welding filler grade AWS A5.14 ERNiCu-7. Three working categories ex Mumbai stock: cold-drawn spring wire (0.5 to 10 mm); welding filler wire (ERNiCu-7 TIG rod and MIG spool for UNS N04400 base metal under ASME Section IX); fine instrumentation wire (0.5 to 1.6 mm, tight diameter tolerance).

Cold-Drawn Spring Wire Tempers per ASTM B164 Table 2

Temper is set by spring design stress and wrapping-test pass criterion. Annealed forms cleanly with no springback; spring temper holds design stress but cannot be re-formed without intermediate annealing.

    TemperCold-work passTypical useForming
Annealed (soft)Final anneal after drawWeld rod, forming wire, fastener feedstockFree-bending, weldable
Quarter hardLight cold-drawMesh, light springs, instrument leadsBendable, light forming
Half hardMedium cold-drawSpring washers, brackish-water meshLimited forming
HardHeavy cold-drawStressed springs, mesh in flowWrapping test only
SpringMaximum cold-drawHF acid valve springs, marine instrument coilsSet-form, no rework

Spring temper is age-stable at ambient; service above 230 C drops strength as cold-work recovers. For higher stressed springs use Monel K-500 (N05500).

Welding Filler Wire (AWS A5.14 ERNiCu-7)

ERNiCu-7 is the AWS A5.14 grade for the Monel 400 nickel-copper welding filler used in GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) of UNS N04400: HF vessel seams, tube-sheet welds, weld-overlay on carbon-steel companion flanges and pump-body repair. See welding. Stick-electrode equivalent is ENiCu-7 per AWS A5.11.

    MIG spool1.2 mm11.3 / 22.7 kg metal spoolGMAW
    Sub-arc coil2.4, 3.2 mm25 / 50 kg coilSAW

Each spool or carton ships heat-numbered with EN 10204 type 3.1 as standard; type 3.2 on indent. ASTM A604 vacuum-fusion hydrogen control on indent for high-restraint root passes.

    Fine Wire and Instrumentation

Fine wire below 1.6 mm runs cold-drawn through diamond dies with intermediate anneals to hold diameter tolerance close to 0.02 mm. Applications: thermocouple lead wire for HF acid and seawater duty where stainless leads fail; marine sensor leads; sealing rings for pharma and HF reactor flanges; brackish-water mesh and filter screen (plain Dutch and twilled Dutch at 30 to 200 mesh); legacy sutures and surgical wire. Ships annealed for weave and forming; harder tempers to drawing.

    Mechanical Properties by Temper

ASTM B164 sets the annealed floor at 70 ksi (480 MPa) tensile minimum, 28 ksi (193 MPa) yield and 35 percent elongation. Spring temper sits at the top of the cold-work envelope. Specify temper and verify on MTC.

    TemperTensile, ksi (MPa)Elongation, minHardness, typical

    Spring130 to 145 (895 to 1000)2% (wrapping)26 to 32 HRC

Spring-temper hardness clears the NACE MR0175 nickel-copper ceiling of 35 HRC; cold-drawn spring wire is acceptable for sour-service spring duty with EN 10204 3.2 plus NACE compliance statement. See mechanical properties.

Chemistry per ASTM B164 (UNS N04400)

Wire chemistry matches B164 rod and B127 plate. ERNiCu-7 follows the same envelope with tightened titanium and aluminium for deoxidation. See chemical composition.

    Applications for Monel 400 Wire

Wire runs where the nickel-copper passivation is required at a small section:

    Certification, Traceability and Inspection

Every coil, spool and carton is heat-numbered and tagged with heat number, spec, UNS N04400, temper or grade, diameter and nominal weight. EN 10204 type 3.1 mill certificate ships as standard; type 3.2 third-party witness (Lloyds, BV, DNV, TUV) on indent for nuclear, sour-service and NORSOK. Wire is tensile-tested, wrapping-tested where invoked, PMI-verified and dimensionally inspected. Traceability chain: heat to coil to drawing item to spring or weld joint. NACE MR0175 spring duty: MTC carries compliance statement, hardness and final temper. Welding wire ships with AWS A5.14 batch chemistry; ASTM A604 hydrogen on indent.

Frequently Asked Questions on Monel 400 Wire
