    ASTM F467 - Monel 400 / UNS N04400 Nonferrous Nuts Specification

Monel 400 nuts to ASTM F467, companion spec to F468 bolts

ASTM F467/F467M is the standard specification for commercial wrought nonferrous nuts 0.250 to 1.500 in. in diameter. For Monel® 400 the standard recognises two compositions: UNS N04400 Class A (weldable, marked F 467U) and UNS N04405 Class B (free-machining, marked F 467V). F467 is the nut-side companion to ASTM F468, which covers Monel 400 bolts, cap screws and studs. Bar input for the nut blanks comes from ASTM B164 in the same Class A or Class B chemistry. Monel is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation; TorqBolt is not authorized by, affiliated with or endorsed by Special Metals.

    F467 Class A vs Class B for Monel 400

Class A is the welding-grade nut: the 0.024 % sulfur ceiling preserves hot ductility through the heat-affected zone so a Class A nut tack-welded to a flange or structural insert behaves predictably. Class B is the machining-grade nut; the controlled sulfur addition (0.025 to 0.060 %) breaks chips on capstan lathes and screw machines and produces a cleaner thread on long runs, but the same sulfur disqualifies the nut from welded service.

    Chemistry per F467 Table 1

Class A and Class B share an identical chemistry envelope except for sulfur. Copper is the balance after the named elements are deducted. The chemistry mirrors ASTM B164 bar, so a single heat lot of B164 R-400 or R-405 stock can feed both bolts (to F468) and nuts (to F467) on the same job number.

F467 Mechanical Floor for Monel 400 Nuts

F467 Table 2 sets a hardness minimum and a proof-stress minimum by alloy and product class. Heavy hex proof stress is 1.08 times the regular hex value (Table 2, Note B). F467 does not set an upper hardness limit on Class A; the sour-service ceiling is imported from NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 at 35 HRC for nickel-copper bolting, and the voluntary 25 HRC cap that F468 places on Class A bolts is normally extended to the matching F467U nut on the procurement order.

    F 467VNi 405 (Class B)60 HRB7076

Hardness is taken on the top or bottom face per F467 section 12.2.2: a single reading for nuts 1/4 to 7/16 in., the average of four readings 90 degrees apart for sizes 1/2 in. and larger. Proof load testing per ASTM F606 takes precedence when both proof load and hardness are run (F467 section 6.2).

    Threads, Dimensions and Marking

Unless the purchase order says otherwise, F467 section 7.1 calls dimensions to ASME B18.2.2 (regular hex, heavy hex, jam, slotted, castle) and section 7.2 calls threads to ASME B1.1 Class 2B, UNC coarse or UNF fine. The 8UN thread series applies from 1-1/8 in. up. Every nut carries two marks per section 17.1: a manufacturer's symbol plus the mechanical property mark (F 467U for Class A, F 467V for Class B), raised or depressed at the manufacturer's option. Each shipping unit is labelled with ASTM designation, alloy number, property mark, size, manufacturer's brand, piece count, country of origin and purchase order number (section 17.3).

    Companion Specs and Raw Material

F467 is normally written into a Monel 400 bolting line item alongside ASTM F468 (bolts, cap screws, studs) and the raw-material spec: ASTM B164 rod and bar feeds nut and bolt manufacture, ASTM B127 plate, ASTM B165 seamless pipe, and ASTM B564 forgings for the heavy bolting range. Sour-service shipments add the NACE MR0175 compliance statement and an EN 10204 type 3.2 certificate. Stress relieving is at the manufacturer's option on Ni 400 and Ni 405 nuts (section 4.2.2) unless the purchaser specifies it.

Variants supplied under F467: Monel 400 nuts, hex nuts (ASME B18.2.2 regular), heavy hex nuts (1.08x proof stress), lock nuts, plus the companion ASTM F468 bolt specification. Pair F 467U with F 468U for Class A weldable joints, F 467V with F 468V for Class B.

    FAQ

    Q. Is ASTM F467 the only nut spec for Monel 400? F467 is the dominant ASTM specification for nonferrous Monel 400 nuts up to 1-1/2 in. Above that band, B564 forging stock is machined to ASME B18.2.2 heavy hex with mechanicals matched to the F 467U floor on the purchase order.

    Q. Does F467 cover metric Monel 400 nuts? F467 is an imperial specification with ASME B1.1 threads. Metric Monel 400 nuts to DIN 934, DIN 6915 or DIN EN ISO 4032/4033 are quoted to the equivalent F467 chemistry and mechanical floor by reference, with chemistry traced to B164 bar.

    Q. What certification ships with an F467 Monel 400 nut? EN 10204 type 2.2 or type 3.1 for standard supply, type 3.2 with third-party surveyor signature (Lloyd's, BV, DNV, IRS, TUV) for sour-service, nuclear or HF alkylation orders.
