ASTM B564 (also ASME SB-564, ASTM B564 Class A, Monel 400 flange ASTM B564, UNS N04400 forging B564, B564 nickel alloy forgings) is the ASTM specification for nickel and nickel-alloy forgings in pressure-containing service. The standard governs open-die, closed-die and ring-rolled forgings, plus forged flanges and forged fittings, across more than twenty UNS grades. UNS N04400 (Monel® 400) sits in B564 Table 1 as the Nickel-Copper Alloy entry, alongside N06600 (Inconel 600), N06625 (Inconel 625), N08800 (Incoloy 800), N08825 (Incoloy 825) and N10276 (Hastelloy C-276). For Monel 400, B564 carries the same chemistry as ASTM B127 and ASTM B164, adapted to forged sections. Monel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation; TorqBolt is not authorized by, affiliated with or endorsed by Special Metals.
B564 applies to wrought forgings produced by hot forging on press or hammer, with optional cold finishing. It does not cover castings (A494 / B30 territory) and does not cover rolled rod, bar, plate or sheet (B127, B164, B165 territory). Typical B564 product forms purchased against UNS N04400 are weld-neck, slip-on, blind, socket-weld flanges, lap-joint stub ends, forged elbows, tees, reducers and caps, valve bodies and bonnets, and tube-sheet forgings. B564 is the controlling material spec; geometry is set by a companion dimensional standard. The Monel 400 supplied to B564 is in the annealed condition.
B564 Table 1 lists over twenty UNS designations grouped by alloy family. Monel 400 sits in the Ni-Cu row. The most commonly procured grades against B564 are below. For the full Table 1 entry on N04400 chemistry see chemical composition.
| UNS | Trade Name | Family (B564) | Typical B564 Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| N04400 | Monel 400 | Ni-Cu | HF alkylation, seawater, marine flanges, sour-service forgings |
| N02200 | Nickel 200 | Ni (commercially pure) | Caustic service, chemical reactors |
| N06600 | Inconel 600 | Ni-Cr-Fe | High-temperature furnace flanges, nitric acid |
| N06625 | Inconel 625 | Ni-Cr-Mo-Nb | Subsea production, sour-service, cryogenic |
| N08800 / N08810 | Incoloy 800 / 800H | Ni-Fe-Cr | Creep-rupture service above 593 degrees Celsius |
| N08825 | Incoloy 825 | Ni-Fe-Cr-Mo-Cu | Sulfuric and phosphoric acid forgings |
| N10276 | Hastelloy C-276 | Low-C Ni-Mo-Cr | Aggressive chloride and oxidising-reducing media |
The procurement engineer specifies ASTM B564 UNS N04400 on the line item; the family row in Table 1 then locks chemistry, mechanical floor and heat treatment.
The Monel 400 entry in ASTM B564 Table 1 holds the same nickel-copper bracket as B164, B127, B165 and F468. Cobalt is counted as nickel per B564 Table 1 Note B.
| Element | ASTM B564 UNS N04400 (percent) | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel + Cobalt | 63.0 min | FCC matrix; corrosion floor |
| Copper | 28.0 - 34.0 | Solid-solution partner; seawater and HF |
| Iron | 2.5 max | Residual from melt |
| Manganese | 2.0 max | Deoxidiser; sulphur sink |
| Carbon | 0.3 max | Solid-solution strengthening |
| Silicon | 0.5 max | Deoxidiser |
| Sulphur | 0.024 max | Weldable Monel 400 (Class A) |

B564 Table 2 sets the minimum floor for the annealed condition. For UNS N04400 forgings the typical published floor is 70 ksi (480 MPa) tensile, 25 ksi (170 MPa) 0.2 percent yield and 35 percent elongation in 2 inches (50 mm). Transverse-tested forgings meet the same floor. Hardness is not a B564 acceptance criterion but is reported on the MTC where the purchaser asks. See mechanical properties.
Monel 400 forgings to B564 start from AOD or VAR remelted ingot or billet. The hot-working window for N04400 is 1093 to 1177 degrees Celsius (2000 to 2150 degrees Fahrenheit); finish forging is held above 955 degrees Celsius to avoid hot-short cracking. After forging the part is annealed at 870 to 980 degrees Celsius (1600 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit), soaked, then air cooled or water quenched by section. The anneal dissolves cold-work strain and restores the single-phase FCC nickel-copper structure. See heat treatment for the time-temperature map.
ASTM B564 supplies the material. The dimensional and pressure-temperature rating standard is purchased in parallel.
A typical Monel 400 weld-neck flange purchase order reads: ASTM B564 UNS N04400, ASME B16.5, Class 300, NPS 4, RF, annealed, EN 10204 type 3.1 MTC, heat-numbered, NACE MR0175 compliant.
