DIN 17743 is the German standard for wrought nickel-copper alloys, registering NiCu30Fe as Werkstoff 2.4360: the European equivalent of Monel® 400 / UNS N04400. Nickel 63 to 70 percent, copper 28 to 34 percent, iron 1.0 to 2.5 percent. The chemistry sits inside the ASTM bracket with two tighter caps - carbon 0.15 max against ASTM 0.30, and sulphur 0.020 max against ASTM 0.024. Monel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation; TorqBolt is not authorized by, affiliated with or endorsed by Special Metals.
DIN 17743 covers semi-finished wrought nickel-copper product in all common forms: round bar, flat bar, wire, plate, sheet, strip, seamless and welded pipe, tube, forgings and fasteners. The chemistry table is single across forms; mechanical tables shift with thickness and condition (annealed, cold-drawn, stress-relieved). The free-machining variant equivalent to Monel R-405 / UNS N04405 is not registered under 17743 and ships against ASTM B164 Class B.
Companion standards: DIN 17742 definitions; DIN 17744 nickel-iron-chromium alloys (Inconel family). EN 10269 cites Werkstoff 2.4360 for fasteners under PED 2014/68/EU.
Chemistry against the matching ASTM specs: ASTM B164 (rod, bar, wire), ASTM B127 (plate, sheet), ASTM B165 (pipe, tube), ASTM B564 (forgings). Weight percent.

The two cells that change are carbon and sulphur, both tightened against the ASTM bracket. Iron is expressed as a band (1.0 to 2.5) rather than a one-sided maximum.
The carbon 0.15 percent maximum is half the ASTM 0.30 ceiling. The cap keeps the alloy weldable without post-weld heat treatment and suppresses grain-boundary carbide precipitation. EU PED 2014/68/EU audits typically refuse heat numbers above 0.15 carbon, so the DIN cap is the practical industry cap inside Europe.
The sulphur 0.020 percent maximum tightens the ASTM 0.024 cap. Low sulphur protects hot-working ductility and avoids manganese-sulphide stringers that interrupt the corrosion film in hydrofluoric acid and seawater service. The cap matches the typical 3.2 MTC class shipped against NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. See chemical composition for the full element-by-element discussion.
DIN 17743 annealed values align with ASTM B164 annealed; cold-worked and stress-relieved values rise with reduction. Full property tables on mechanical properties.
| Property | Annealed bar (typical) | Cold-drawn bar (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 480 MPa min (70 ksi) | 580 to 760 MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2 percent) | 195 MPa min (28 ksi) | 380 MPa min |
| Elongation (4D) | 35 percent min | 20 percent min |

Forgings against ASTM B564 Class A drop to the annealed yield. Cold-drawn ships stress-relieved for stud bolts and hex bolts to ASTM F468 / EN 10269.
The same NiCu30Fe chemistry registers under nine national designations. Specify DIN 17743 NiCu30Fe (2.4360) plus the matching ASTM on EU-bound purchase orders.

What is DIN 17743? DIN 17743 is the German standard for wrought nickel-copper alloys. It registers NiCu30Fe (Werkstoff 2.4360) as the European designation for Monel 400 / UNS N04400. The standard covers rod, bar, wire, plate, sheet, strip, pipe, tube, forgings and fasteners.
What is Werkstoff 2.4360? Werkstoff 2.4360 is the German material number for NiCu30Fe per DIN 17743. The same alloy registers as UNS N04400 in the USA, BS 3076 NA13 in the UK and NU30 in France.
Is DIN 17743 equivalent to ASTM B164? Yes on nickel and copper. The nickel 63 to 70 percent and copper 28 to 34 percent ranges match. DIN 17743 caps carbon at 0.15 max against ASTM 0.30, and sulphur at 0.020 max against ASTM 0.024. Iron is bracketed 1.0 to 2.5 percent in DIN against a 2.5 maximum in ASTM.
Why is DIN 17743 carbon tighter than ASTM? The 0.15 cap keeps the alloy weldable without post-weld heat treatment and prevents grain-boundary carbide precipitation in pressure-vessel and piping service. EU PED 2014/68/EU audits typically refuse heat numbers above 0.15 carbon.
Which European equivalents map to DIN 17743 NiCu30Fe? EN designation NiCu30Fe, BS 3076 NA13 (UK), AFNOR NU30 (France), JIS NW4400 (Japan). UNS cross-reference is N04400.
