    Monel 400 rod, bar and wire to ASTM B164, UNS N04400

    ASTM B164 (also ASTM B164 Monel 400, ASTM B164 rod, ASTM B164 bar, UNS N04400 B164) is the Standard Specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy Rod, Bar, and Wire. It covers UNS N04400 (Monel 400) and UNS N04405 (free-machining Monel R-405). Monel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation; TorqBolt is not authorized by, affiliated with or endorsed by Special Metals. B164 is the most-cited Monel 400 bar spec because it feeds ASTM F468 bolts and F467 nuts.     Scope of ASTM B164

    B164 covers round, square, hexagon and rectangular cross-sections produced as hot-worked rod and bar, cold-worked rod and bar, and cold-worked wire. Rings, disks and forging-quality material are also included. The two grades share the same nickel-plus-cobalt and copper bracket; N04405 differs only in raised sulphur for machinability.

    B164 does not cover precipitation-hardened Monel K-500 (UNS N05500). K-500 rod and bar ship under ASTM B865, written around the aluminium-titanium age-hardening response N04400 and N04405 do not have.

    Chemistry per ASTM B164

    Both B164 grades sit in the same bracket as B127 plate, B165 pipe and B564 forgings. Cobalt is counted as nickel. N04405 lifts sulphur from 0.024 percent max to 0.025 - 0.060 percent for chip break. Detail: chemical composition.

    B164 Table 1 sets the floor by alloy, condition and cross-section. N04400 hot-worked annealed rod is the most-shipped because it feeds F468 alloy 400 bolt manufacture under the 25 HRC cap.

    Rings and disks use Rockwell brackets: B75 - B95 hot-worked, B60 - B75 annealed. Forging-quality bar ships to chemistry only.

    Hardness Ceilings - F468 25 HRC, NACE 35 HRC

    B164 gives brackets, not absolute ceilings. Downstream specs are stricter. F468 alloy 400 bolts (machined from B164 N04400 rod) cap hardness at 25 HRC for NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 sour service. NACE MR0175 itself permits N04400 up to 35 HRC for non-bolt parts, but the F468 25 HRC cap controls every TorqBolt sour-service alloy 400 bolt heat.
