UNS N04400 (also written N04400, Monel 400, Alloy 400, Nickel 400, Werkstoff 2.4360, DIN 17743 NiCu30Fe) is the Unified Numbering System designation for the nickel-copper solid-solution alloy at 63 to 70 percent nickel and 28 to 34 percent copper. Chemistry is covered by ASTM B164, B127, B165, B564, F468 and F467. Monel® is a trademark of Special Metals Corporation; UNS N04400 is the generic designation on the purchase order.
The Unified Numbering System is the cross-industry metals registry maintained by ASTM and SAE under SAE J1086 / ASTM E527. Each UNS number is a single letter prefix plus five digits. The leading N tags the nickel family; 04400 is the Monel 400 entry. N04405 covers the free-machining variant (R-405); N05500 covers the age-hardened grade (K-500). UNS fixes chemistry only; form, condition and mechanicals come from the matching ASTM product spec.
UNS N04400 is listed in seven ASTM product specifications. The chemistry table is identical across all seven; the spec number changes with the wrought form. Specify ASTM plus UNS plus EN 10204 type 3.1 or 3.2 MTC.
| Form | ASTM spec | UNS designation |
|---|---|---|
| Rod, bar, wire | ASTM B164 | N04400, N04405 |
| Plate, sheet, strip | ASTM B127 | N04400 |
| Seamless pipe and tube | ASTM B165 | N04400 |
| Condenser and heat-exchanger tube | ASTM B163 | N04400 |
| Forgings, flanges | ASTM B564 | N04400 |
| Bolts, hex cap screws, studs | ASTM F468 | N04400 (Class A), N04405 (Class B) |
| Nuts | ASTM F467 | N04400 (Class A), N04405 (Class B) |
The same chemistry registers under nine national designations. Use UNS N04400 as the primary call-out; the rest are receiving-inspection cross-references.

Three UNS numbers cover the Monel nickel-copper family. UNS N04400 (Monel 400) is the standard solid-solution grade, sulphur 0.024 max, weldable and NACE MR0175 sour-service eligible. UNS N04405 (Monel R-405) shares the 63 to 70 Ni / 28 to 34 Cu window but raises sulphur to 0.025 to 0.060 percent for free-machining MnS chip breakers; specified where the joint stays unwelded. UNS N05500 (Monel K-500) adds Al 2.30 to 3.15 and Ti 0.35 to 0.85 for gamma-prime precipitation hardening, reaching 90 to 130 ksi yield against 40 to 50 ksi for annealed N04400. Detail on Monel 400 vs Monel K-500.
What does UNS N04400 mean? The Unified Numbering System designation for the nickel-copper alloy at 63 to 70 percent nickel and 28 to 34 percent copper. N tags the nickel family; 04400 is the Monel 400 entry.
Is N04400 the same as Monel 400? Yes. UNS N04400, Monel 400, Alloy 400, Werkstoff 2.4360 and DIN 17743 NiCu30Fe refer to the same chemistry. Monel is a trademark of Special Metals; UNS N04400 is the generic call-out on the purchase order.
What is the UNS N04400 equivalent in DIN? DIN 17743 NiCu30Fe and Werkstoff 2.4360. The DIN bracket is tighter on carbon (0.15 max vs 0.30 max) and sulphur (0.020 max vs 0.024 max).
What ASTM standards cover UNS N04400? B164 (bar, wire), B127 (plate, sheet), B165 (pipe, tube), B163 (condenser tube), B564 (forgings), F468 (bolts) and F467 (nuts).
