Monel 400 tubing (also Monel 400 tubes, Monel 400 tube, Monel 400 condenser tubing, Alloy 400 tubing, UNS N04400 tube, Werkstoff 2.4360 tube) ships against two ASTM specifications: ASTM B163 for condenser and heat-exchanger tube and ASTM B165 for seamless pipe and general-purpose tube. Chemistry is anchored by ASTM B127. TorqBolt Mumbai supplies both standards from 1/8 in. to 6 in. OD with 0.5 to 12 mm wall, in annealed seamless or cold-drawn condition, with EN 10204 type 3.1 or type 3.2 MTC. Monel® is a trademark of Special Metals Corporation.
Both ASTM B163 and ASTM B165 cover Monel 400 (UNS N04400) tube and partition the envelope by service. ASTM B163 is the condenser and heat-exchanger tube specification with eddy-current testing for shell-and-tube bundles. ASTM B165 is the seamless pipe and tube specification covering a wider OD and wall envelope including pipe schedules, with hydrostatic test, for general process piping. The PO calls one or the other; the MTC records which.

TorqBolt supplies Monel 400 tube in the full ASTM B163 and B165 envelope. OD runs from 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) through 6 in. (168.3 mm); wall runs from 0.5 mm through 12 mm. Lengths are random 4 to 7 m, fixed 6 m or 12 m, or cut-to-size against the bundle drawing. Tolerances follow ASTM B163 paragraph 12 and ASTM B165 paragraph 12. Out-of-roundness limit is 2 percent of OD for cold-drawn seamless.

For long heat-exchanger bundles (10 m and longer) confirm cold-draw mill capability at order placement.
ASTM B163 and B165 cite ASTM B127 as the chemistry standard for UNS N04400. Nickel sits between 63 and 70 percent and copper between 28 and 34 percent. The Ni-Cu ratio is the basis for seawater and HF acid resistance.
| Element | Min % | Max % |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) plus Cobalt | 63.0 | 70.0 |
| Copper (Cu) | 28.0 | 34.0 |

Both ASTM B163 and B165 specify the annealed condition as the baseline for Monel 400 tube. The mechanical floor is set by 70 ksi (480 MPa) tensile minimum, 25 ksi (170 MPa) yield minimum at 0.2 percent offset and 35 percent elongation minimum in 2 in. (50.8 mm). Hardness sits in the B60 to B80 HRB band for cold-drawn annealed tube. Full mechanical reference on the mechanical properties page.
| Property | Annealed minimum | Typical mill value |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 70 ksi (480 MPa) | 78 to 85 ksi (540 to 585 MPa) |
| Yield strength 0.2% offset | 25 ksi (170 MPa) | 30 to 45 ksi (205 to 310 MPa) |
| Elongation in 2 in. | 35% | 40 to 48% |
| Hardness | - | B60 to B80 HRB |
Monel 400 tube is the default selection for seawater-coolant shell-and-tube bundles on offshore platforms and FPSO topsides where 90/10 cupronickel is too soft for high-velocity service and titanium is too expensive. The nickel-copper film is stable in flowing seawater up to 4 m/s, in brackish-water condensers, in naval feedwater heaters and in HF acid alkylation overhead condensers (refer the HF acid resistance and HF alkylation pages). The tube is specified on naval condensers where austenitic stainless cracks under chloride-induced SCC. Detail on marine applications and seawater corrosion.
Monel 400 tube ships in five practical conditions: cold-drawn pickled bright (default for B163 bundle service), cold-drawn pickled dull, annealed seamless, cold-worked stress-relieved and solution-annealed. Bright pickled finish leaves the OD oxide-free after mixed-acid pickling. Wall-thickness uniformity for heat-exchanger service is held to plus or minus 10 percent of nominal wall on cold-drawn seamless; out-of-roundness is held to 2 percent of OD.
Monel 400 tube ships against EN 10204 type 3.1 (manufacturer MTC, signed by an independent quality inspector) as standard and against EN 10204 type 3.2 (witnessed by Lloyds, DNV, BV or TUV) for sour service and offshore orders. ASTM B163 paragraph 10 calls for eddy-current test on every length of condenser tube; ASTM B165 paragraph 11 calls for a hydrostatic test or an electric NDE in lieu. Tensile retest is performed per heat lot; flattening, flaring and reverse-flattening tests per B163 and B165 acceptance criteria. For NACE sour-service orders refer the NACE MR0175 and sour service pages.
What is Monel 400 tubing used for? Monel 400 tubing is specified for seawater heat-exchanger and condenser bundles, naval feedwater heaters, HF acid alkylation tube bundles, brackish-water condensers and chemical process service where austenitic stainless and copper alloys fail. ASTM B163 covers condenser and heat-exchanger tube; ASTM B165 covers seamless pipe and general-purpose tube. Both standards reference UNS N04400 with chemistry per ASTM B127.
Is Monel 400 tube seamless or welded? ASTM B163 and B165 both permit seamless and welded Monel 400 tube. Cold-drawn seamless is the default for heat-exchanger bundles below NPS 2; welded with cold-finished after weld is supplied for larger OD and where wall uniformity is less critical. The MTC declares the route. For sour service and HF alkylation, specify seamless explicitly.
What is the difference between ASTM B163 and B165 Monel 400 tube? ASTM B163 is the condenser and heat-exchanger tube specification with eddy-current testing per the standard, intended for shell-and-tube bundles. ASTM B165 is the seamless pipe and tube specification with hydrostatic test, intended for general process piping. Both apply to UNS N04400. Order to B163 for tube-bundle service; order to B165 for pipe and general tube.
Does Monel 400 tube need NACE certification? Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is listed in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 for sour service in the annealed and cold-worked stress-relieved conditions at a 35 HRC hardness ceiling. Tube ordered to B163 or B165 in the annealed condition clears the NACE hardness gate by design. For an H2S service order, specify NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 on the PO; TorqBolt issues EN 10204 type 3.2 MTC with the NACE compliance statement.
