    Monel 400 Sheet - UNS N04400 ASTM B127, 0.5 to 4.75 mm

Monel 400 sheet (also Monel 400 sheets, UNS N04400 sheet, Alloy 400 sheet) is rolled nickel-copper to ASTM B127 in 0.5 to 4.75 mm. Above 4.75 mm is Monel 400 plate; below 0.51 mm and under 610 mm wide is strip. TorqBolt ships hot-rolled and cold-rolled annealed sheet for HF acid, marine and NaOH caustic service. Monel® is a trademark of Special Metals Corporation.

ASTM B127 Scope - Sheet vs Plate vs Strip

ASTM B127 covers N04400 plate, sheet and strip. Form is fixed by thickness and (for strip) by width. Chemistry, mechanical minima and certification are common across the three forms; only the rolling route, tolerance band and finish differ.

    FormThickness (mm)Thickness (in)Width limitTypical condition
    Strip0.10 to 0.510.004 to 0.020under 610 mm (24 in)Cold-rolled annealed
    Sheet0.51 to 4.750.020 to 0.1875no upper limitCold-rolled annealed or hot-rolled annealed
    Plateabove 4.75above 0.1875no upper limitHot-rolled annealed

TorqBolt stocks the full 0.5 to 4.75 mm band. For thicker stock see Monel 400 plate; for strip in coil, send the finished width and temper with the enquiry.

Monel 400 Sheet Thickness, Width and Length Range

Standard widths 1000, 1219, 1500 mm; standard lengths 2000, 2440, 3000, 6000 mm. Tolerances below are nominal cold-rolled annealed values; the full B127 schedule prints on the MTC. Custom shear-to-size is available ex-Mumbai.

Below 1.5 mm the 2B bright finish is the default for cabinetry. From 1.5 to 3 mm the 2D pickled finish is the standard for chemical service. Above 3 mm the route shifts to HRAP.

    Chemistry per ASTM B127

UNS N04400 is a single-phase nickel-copper solid solution. Iron, manganese, silicon and carbon are capped to preserve weldability and corrosion resistance. Full composition on the chemistry page.

    Mechanical Properties (Annealed and Cold-Rolled)

B127 sets the annealed sheet minima. Cold-rolled stress-relieved (CRSR) sheet is non-standard but is available on indent for spring duty; values below are typical at 25 percent reduction. Detail on the mechanical properties page.

    PropertyB127 Annealed minCRSR typicalTest

Annealed values are specification minima, not targets. Mill heats typically clear yield by 30 to 50 MPa. Verify the EN 10204 3.1 MTC on receipt; for HF and caustic duty insist on a tensile retest at one coupon per heat per thickness.

    Surface Finishes Available

Finish is independent of B127 chemistry; the procurement instruction names finish, condition and tolerance band separately. Five mill finishes:

    • HRAP (No. 1): hot-rolled annealed pickled, matte grey. Chemical linings and caustic vessels.
    • 2D: cold-rolled annealed pickled, dull matte. Forming blanks, weld fabrication.
    • 2B: cold-rolled bright, light skin pass. Cabinetry, marine fit-out.
    • No. 4: mechanical polish, 180 to 240 grit directional. Architectural panels.
    • Hairline: long-grain brushed. Decorative and electronic enclosures.

For naval fit-out the 2B and No. 4 finishes are the working specification; for HF splash guards and caustic vessel linings 2D or HRAP is preferred so weld preparation does not bite through a polished skin.

    Cold-Forming, Bending and Springback

Monel 400 is highly formable annealed. The alloy work-hardens; cold reductions beyond 30 percent need an intermediate anneal at 870 to 980 degrees Celsius and water quench (see heat treatment). Springback exceeds carbon steel (modulus 179 GPa against 200 GPa) and the work-hardening index is 0.35.

    Working envelope:

    • 90 deg bend, 0.5 to 3 mm: inside radius 1 t min; 35 percent annealed elongation supports the tight radius.
    • 90 deg bend, 4 to 4.75 mm: inside radius 1.5 t min for the heavier section.
    • Deep draw: ratio up to 2.0 single stage with chlorinated wax; remove residue before service.
    • Heavy cold reduction: intermediate anneal above 30 percent to prevent edge cracking.
    • Press brake, 1.0 mm: over-bend 3 to 5 degrees for springback.

    Applications for Monel 400 Sheet

Sheet is specified where the nickel-copper film resists service that defeats austenitic stainless and carbon steel.

    • HF acid splash guards and drip pans on HF alkylation decks per API RP 751 (see HF acid resistance, HF alkylation).
    • Marine cabinetry, galley panels and naval bulkhead linings (see marine applications).
    • Brackish and seawater tank linings for ballast, fire-main and service-water duty on FPSO and offshore platforms.
    • NaOH caustic vessel linings at 50 to 73 percent and up to 130 degrees Celsius where stainless suffers caustic SCC.
    • Heat-exchanger baffle and tube support sheets in seawater coolers and ammonia condensers.
    • Dilute HCl scrubber linings up to 10 percent at ambient.

    Certification and Traceability

Every shipment carries an EN 10204 MTC tied to the heat number. Type 3.1 versus 3.2 is set by the procurement specification and the criticality of the service.

    • EN 10204 type 3.1: manufacturer QA-QC. Commercial, marine cabinetry, general fabrication.
    • EN 10204 type 3.2: manufacturer plus TPI (Lloyds, BV, DNV, TUV, ABS). HF alkylation, naval, NACE MR0175 sour service.
    • PMI report: on-shipment XRF or OES; confirms the Ni-Cu fingerprint per sheet.
    • Heat number stencil: low-stress die stamp or vibro-etch for heat traceability into the fabrication.

The MTC records heat chemistry, tensile, elongation and rolling route against B127. Sheet leaves Mumbai with the heat stamped on every cut and the MTC bound to the packing list.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is Monel 400 sheet? Rolled nickel-copper alloy UNS N04400 to ASTM B127 in 0.5 to 4.75 mm thickness. The alloy carries 63 percent min nickel and 28 to 34 percent copper, ships hot-rolled annealed or cold-rolled annealed, and is specified for HF acid, marine and NaOH caustic service.

What is the difference between Monel 400 sheet and plate? ASTM B127 sets the break at 4.75 mm (0.1875 in). At or below 4.75 mm is sheet; above 4.75 mm is plate. Strip is a sub-form at 0.51 mm and thinner with a 610 mm width ceiling. Chemistry, mechanical minima and certification are common across the three forms.
