Monel 400 Square Bar — UNS N04400 per ASTM B164

Monel 400 square bar is wrought UNS N04400 stock in square cross-section, supplied for shaft keys, square-head bolt blanks, downstream machined fittings, and structural reinforcement in chemical-process equipment. TorqBolt supplies hot-rolled and cold-finished square bar to ASTM B164 in sizes 1/4″ through 4″ (6-100mm), random lengths 3-6 m. EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certification supplied.

    Chemistry & Mechanical Properties

Chemistry per UNS N04400 (Ni 63+ / Cu 28-34). Annealed: tensile 70 ksi / 485 MPa min, yield 28 ksi / 195 MPa min, elongation 35% min. Full mechanical data.

    Manufacturing Routes

    • Hot-rolled: rolled to size at >800°C, pickled and shot-blasted finish. Larger sizes (>50mm) typically hot-rolled.
    • Cold-finished: drawn or peeled-ground to tight tolerance. Smaller sizes for precision machining.

    Common Applications

    • Shaft keys (parallel + tapered)
    • Square-head bolt blanks for ASME B18.2.1
    • Structural reinforcement bars in chemical-process tanks
    • Downstream machined fittings (square-section adapters)
    • Cable-clamp blanks

    Applicable Standards

    • ASTM B164 - Monel rod, bar, wire
    • ASME B18.2.1 - square-head bolts (downstream)
    • DIN 6885 - parallel keys (where Monel keys are specified)
    • EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 - certification

    FAQs

Why use Monel 400 for shaft keys?

In pumps and shafts running in seawater, chloride brines, or HF chemistry, conventional carbon-steel or stainless keys corrode and seize. Monel 400 keys remain free-moving and don't weld themselves to the shaft over time.

    Hot-rolled vs cold-finished — which to specify?

For machining downstream, cold-finished holds tighter tolerance and produces less swarf. For weld inserts or structural reinforcement, hot-rolled is adequate and cheaper.

What's the smallest square bar Monel 400 is rolled to?

Practical minimum is 1/4″ (6mm) cold-drawn. Below that, specify Monel 400 wire instead and machine the square form from round.

Can square bar substitute for round bar in machining?

Usually not — square bar adds machining cost (cutting tools must shape four corners). Use round bar for circular features, square bar only when the cross-section itself is needed.
